Doubt

Broadway虽然音乐剧最有名,其实它是一个戏剧区,话剧演出占了半壁江山。只不过对旅游者来说,来纽约都是看音乐剧而已。说起来我也一直都看的是音乐剧,有歌有舞,轻松欢快,一想碰那些严肃题材的话剧有点头大。可是下午看完Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, 大脑好像在黏糊糊的糖浆里泡的脱水,恨不得马上整点浓缩的苦咖啡,中和一下,于是晚上我决定去看话剧。

去看演出前我在Broadway转悠,走进了Hirschfeld Theatre对面的Triton Gallery. 很小很清静的一家小店,和销售大路货的Broadway Store不同,这里主要卖theatre原版海报。一看就是专卖给theatre goer的,不是旅游纪念品商店。几乎各个时期所有演出的海报这里都有卖,当然价格都不便宜,一张张翻过仿佛在百老汇戏剧历史中转了一圈。它还卖一些窗户帖,明信片,样子都很艺术,并不常见。比如看到各种关于Cats的铅笔速写和水彩画,就很有意思。可惜Les Miz的只有大路货,不新奇。最后挑了两张明信片,算是这次Broadway之行的纪念品。

我选择的话剧Doubt是今年最成功的话剧作品,几乎包揽了戏剧界所有重要奖项。Broadway上演话剧的剧院相比演音乐剧的剧院就规模小的多朴素的多,我来的Walter Kerr Theatre算是大的,能坐1000人左右,我坐在第三层最后一排,座位不怎么好,太高了。不过看到剧场已经爆满,我能买到票坐着看戏也就不错了。

“What will you do if you have DOUBT?” 这是演出开始Father Flynn说出的第一句台词,也是全剧的主题。

Doubt讲述的故事发生在1964年纽约Bronx的一家天主教会学校,Sister Aloysius是一个严厉,刻板,不苟言笑的修女和学监。学校的一位教员Father Flynn年轻活泼不拘小节的作风让她不满。一次和另一位年轻的修女教师Sister James谈话中得知Father Flynn很偏爱学校新来的也是第一位黑人学生,特别有一次Sister James注意到该生和Father Flynn单独相处后回到教室表现沮丧。Sister Aloysius立刻怀疑Father Flynn可能对这个学生有不轨行为。第一次以排练节目的名义找Father Flynn谈话,结果几句话Sister Aloysius就单刀直入的询问Father FlynnFather Flynn气愤的说是因为这个黑人孩子来到学校后处处被孤立,很不开心,自己出于关心才表现偏爱,根本是清清白白,对Sister James谈到的事情也解释的很清楚,相当坦然。Sister James相信了Father Flynn, 然而Sister Aloysius却没有善罢甘休。她又找来该生的母亲,Mrs. Muller,一位优雅的黑人女士,了结情况,并说出了自己的怀疑,希望她帮助自己和Father Flynn对质。谁知Mrs. Muller一听却哭着求Sister Aloysius不要追究。她说自己的孩子够可怜的了,因为他的取向不同,在家挨父亲打,在学校受同学欺负。她只希望孩子能度过这个学期,升入一个更好的学校好有个前程。Father Flynn是唯一关心她孩子对他孩子好的人,这就够了,她不关心他动机是什么。这一番话,不但没打消Sister Aloysius的想法,反而让她更加坚定的要调查到底。Father Flynn气愤地找到Sister Aloysius,质问她在没有任何证据的情况下凭什么到处打听败坏他的名誉,Sister Aloysius却一口咬定自己的想法肯定没错,Father Flynn一定是干了不道德的事,如果不辞职她将继续把怀疑到处捅。冬天到了,Sister JamesSister Aloysius, Father Flynn辞职离开,你总算满意了。你怀疑他,和他对质的时候,到底有没有证据?Sister Aloysius回答自己没有,可是如果Flynn真的什么也没干,他就不会辞职离开。Sister James问,那你当时就这么肯定是他么?Sister Aloysius回答:“God knows, I have so much DOUBT!”

Doubt这个剧只有四个演员,但是每个人都刻划的形象鲜明血肉丰满。Sister James是个年轻单纯的新教师,对学生满腔热忱,对Sister Aloysius尊敬有加。她很欣赏Father Flynn,后来Father FlynnSister Aloysius对质,她夹在中间左右为难。Mrs. Muller作为母亲,对自己的孩子满腔爱意却又无能为力,声泪俱下的求Sister Aloysius,让人辛酸。(注:饰演Mrs. MullerAdriane Lenox获得今年Tony最佳女配角奖) Father Flynn由去年Tony最佳男主角奖得主Brian F.O’Byrne扮演。他把一个年轻气盛,不拘教条,充满活力的神父演的十分生动,与Sister Aloysius生硬古板的气质形成鲜明对比。(这个角色让他今年再度获得Tony最佳男主角提名)

而这个剧的灵魂人物,就是Cherry Jones饰演的Sister Aloysius (她凭该角获得今年Tony最佳女主角奖) Sister Aloysius是一个令人生畏的女人,刻板,强硬,对人对己都严格要求。虽然身为修女,却没有半点慈善仁厚劲,反像手捧烈焰之剑的大天使,以驱邪除恶来侍奉上帝。这是一个半点不讨人喜欢却让人无法忘记的人物。最令人恐惧的就是她对自己的信念,判断力的绝对相信,即使是完全没有证据也从未动摇。Doubt里最精彩的一幕就是Father Flynn和她的对质。Father Flynn的愤怒像火山一样喷发,大声咆哮着你没有任何证据,你这是私人报复,你的所作所为完全背叛了圣职的誓言!Sister Aloysius象块顽石一样冰冷坚硬,无论Father Flynn怎样解释,请求,怒吼,始终纹丝不动。你必须辞职。否则,我将追查到底,就算越级,就算违反规定,也要让你身败名裂.”

作者John Patrick Shanely在刻画人物的时候并没有作简单判断,始终以冷静客观不偏不倚的态度讲述这个故事。故事的结局,Father Flynn离开了,却转到另一个学校。Sister Aloysius进行的除恶举动,也不过是让自己学校清静一点。对于Father Flynn是否真的有罪,故事给了一个并不令人信服的结尾。Sister Aloysius始终没有证据,她针对Father Flynn,究竟是真的出于义愤,还是有个人不满搀杂其中?Father Flynn表现的怒气,对自己行为的解释,都感觉很真诚。他的离开,是真的心虚,还是因为不想越描越黑?所有这些,都是Doubt留给观众思考的问题。

演出结束我在Stage door见到了所有演员,每个人都很热情。特别是Brian F.O’Byrne。我告诉他这是我第一次看Broadway play,他很高兴,说希望我将来能多看一些话剧。我说我坐在最后,可是还是能感觉到你和Ms.Jones争执时那种巨大的能量和激情,相当震撼。我很喜欢这个作品,它让我思考而不是简单的娱乐。他特别耐心特别亲切的和我交流,还给我的playbill上写下祝福。最后见到Ms.Jones,祝贺她获奖。

The play manages to do a lot of things at once. On the surface, it can be experienced simply as a pretty gripping story as Sister Aloysius attempts to unravel the secrets and history of Father Flynn - less a "whodunnit?" then a "did he do it?" There is, of course, the topicality of the sex scandals that have rocked the Catholic church over the past few years. As you live with the play a little longer, you'll discover that it's up to much more. For starters, there's the year in which the play is set - 1964. That time period - which also inspired Tony Kushner in Caroline, Or Change - following Kennedy's assassination and the turbulence yet to come is when a seismic shift began to occur in this country, a collective loss of innocence (if I may make a broad oversimplification). It's also the era of the Second Vatican Council, which caused great changes in the Catholic Church itself, and you feel the clash of styles between the rigid, old-fashioned staunchly pre-Vatican II Sister Aloysius, who feels that religious leaders should be fearsome icons of moral guidance and piety, and the progressive Father Flynn, who is seeking for the clergy to feel more like a member of the community. The play carries the subtitle, "a parable," which is a short story meant to impart a lesson. Shanley has commented that he wrote the play to examine the moral certainty of America at this point in time - the type of certainty that led us to invade Iraq because we were convinced that the country was holding weapons of mass destruction, despite little evidence that they truly existed. It's the same crusade that Sister Aloysius engages in when she accuses Father Flynn, despite dubious evidence that he has commited any act of pedophilia. Shanley is also writing about the current Court TV environment in the media - the circus that ensues with celebrity trials and the "he's innocent/he's guilty" camps that ensue and divide us, as well as the political talk shows like Hardball with people screaming at each other, and whoever screams the loudest being declared the victor. It happens in the audience at Doubt; husbands and wives and friends are invariably split into factions - those that think Flynn is innocent, those that think he's guilty, and a small group of people who are not sure. The play's title, Doubt, is another point that Shanley is trying to make. It is sometimes OK to slow down and say, "I don't know. I need to think about that. I have doubt," rather than jumping to a position of certainty, as we so often like to do. To say "I'm not sure" at this time in this country is seen as a sign of weakness, whereas Shanley is saying it's the sign of a mind at work, examining what we know and don't know and trying to come to an equitable decision. Shanley is also examining the role of women in society. Seeing the Iraqi women in burkas on television is what made him think back to his Catholic school upbringing and the nun's habits (and the Sisters of Charity, with their distinctive bonnets in particular). The modern era and this time and place in his past coalesced and the play came into his mind. Aloysius and the nuns in the Catholic church lead a subserviant existence. Even today, the church is still largely a boy's club. Aloysius still wields tremendous power and has a rigorous mind, even if her moral certainty leads her to destroy the lives of several people around her. In the play's final moment, though, something cracks in her, and as Shanley recently commented at a Barnes and Noble signing this past week, a modern woman is born. Add to all of that the play's unexpected pockets of humor, which is much more evident in the play's Broadway production, and you have a pretty complete experience in a mere 90 minutes.

最后一天去Lincoln Center TheatreThe light in the Piazza。说Broadway商业,也对也不对。尽管大多数演出都是商业化运作,制作人筹集资金,靠票房营利。但是也有Roundabout, laceName w:st="on">LincolnlaceName> laceType w:st="on">Center Theatre这样非商业机构,给优秀的艺术家更大的创作自由,鼓励在艺术形式,题材上的冒险和创新。比如Roundabout多次演出Sondheim作品,去年的Assassins, 今年的Pacific Overture,都广受关注。Lincoln Center在重排经典,推出新作方面,也是硕果累累。我这次看的Light in the Piazza, 获得今年Tony最佳词曲,最佳音乐指导,最佳布景,最佳灯光,最佳服装和最佳女主角等重要奖项。

Lincoln Center Theatre外面贴着Stokes的大幅海报,他的个人音乐会上个月刚刚结束。

All the dancing and romancing, the easy friendships and dates, meetings and partings, may seem frivolous to talk about—though there’s not much wrong with frivolity, God knows—but it was more than that one felt in France and Italy in those days. Light in the Piazza的迷人之处,与其说是故事,不如说是它用音乐,灯光,布景,表演营造的那种柔和,典雅,温暖,浪漫的气氛。Lincoln Center Theatre不大,本身就给人小剧场的亲切。特殊改装过的舞台相反特别向前伸出,深入观众席,演员上下场就是从观众席前方直接走上舞台。没有幕,舞台上是精美古朴的罗马花岗岩建筑,一尊文艺复兴时期美丽的雕像。舞台最右侧有一个石凳,上面摆着一个扎着红丝带的草帽,一束温和的光打在上面。演出开始,背景用得是温暖的浅黄色光,Magaret母女被美丽的雕塑吸引。一阵风吹过,吹起地上落叶片片,把Clara那只可爱的草帽吹上天,她追过去,一个小伙子先拣到了,原来他偷偷跟随她跟了很久,这是他们第一次说话。古老的建筑,干净的石板路,清静的咖啡馆,小镇来来往往的英俊的男人,身穿漂亮连衣裙的女人,一个青年骑着自行车优哉游哉的过去了,两个修士热烈的讨论着神学问题,一个皮球滚到脚下,修士忍不住颠上两脚,踢回去,继续边走边讨论整个故事就在这种不急不缓的调子中娓娓道来,让人身临其境。除了SignorMagaret说话用英语,所有意大利人都用意大利语说话,歌唱。不懂意大利语也没关系,反正说的不外乎就是爱情贝。顺便说一下,意大利语听起来真好听。

音乐像河水一样涓涓流淌。我从来没有在theatre听过现场效果这么好,情绪这么饱满的乐队,太美丽了。一般看音乐剧我都是注意剧中人物的唱段,但是这里让我更多的注意整个背景音乐,在渲染气氛推动情节抒发感情中,每一点都作的恰到好处。如果你习惯于流行乐琅琅上口的风格,Piazza的音乐初听可能会不习惯。但对我来说,Piazza音乐对情感处理的细腻,完美的表达了创作者的创作理念。

我喜欢所有的角色。成熟老练风度翩翩的Signor, 他风流倜当的长子GiuseppeGiuseppe美丽泼辣的老婆Franca,每个人都很生动。Matthew Morrison饰演的Fabrizio真是又英俊又浪漫,操着半生不熟的英语跟Clara谈情说爱可爱死了,还有一副迷人的歌喉。我看的Claraunderstudy, Jennifer Hughes, 表演歌唱都很好,只是有些高音处唱的有点破,不够圆润。Victoria Clark饰演的Magaret 只能用完美来形容。那种优雅,娴静的气质和风度,年过不惑,为人实际却依然保存着对艺术对生活的热情和梦想。正是这样的梦想让她能够勇敢的接受女儿的选择。痛苦难过时,静静的一动不动,脸上表情不变却能让人感到内心波涛汹涌。而她的歌声,象百灵一样婉转悠扬。她凭这个角色获得今年Tony最佳女主角奖,实在是当之无愧。

可以说,这次纽约之行,最大的收获就是看了Piazza。唯一的遗憾是因为要赶回去的车,我没能去Stage door见到演员。不过这也好,反正我还想再看一遍,下次总还是有机会。

花絮:演出前,剧院里一个温柔的女声用意大利语进行广播,大家什么也听不懂。只听到了Cellphone, Beeper,于是笑着开始关闭手机。
